Darkra's AU: Part 2

Picking up from the end of part one, let's recap: Sora lost his heart, become a Heartless, and joined Riku and Kairi. Ansem was defeated, the Door closed and now they have the option to return home. Riku refused to return home until Sora could go with him, a fully restored person, and so Kairi, Donald and Goofy vowed to stay as well. So here's where we pick up.

They have no idea what to do or where to go, so instead, they head off to scour the worlds in hopes of finding a solution. However, they quickly realize they're stuck in their destination: Twilight Town. With some traveling, they come across the mystery train and decide to board--they have nothing else to do. It takes them to Yen Sid's tower, and there they have to convince him to help. It takes a bit, but after Riku admits he wishes he could have done something for Sora instead of forgetting about him for all those years--even after he remembered, he was helpless to keep Sora from his current fate, leaving him burdened by guilt--Yen Sid decides to give them his help. He tells them that the only know way of restoration would be to find Sora's Nobody, then destroy both Heartless and shell.

Riku clenches a fist and bears with it, despite not wanting to hurt anyone. Yen Sid tells him of the ways to travel between worlds with his Keyblade. Riku thanks him, but before he can go, the three fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather all bustle out to him and refuse to let him leave until they can give him a gift as thanks for rescuing Aurora. The three together whip up three magic rings.

"Should you ever be separated, then you can still speak to each other," they said. So Riku and Kairi took the rings, tucking them away for now--Kairi holding onto Sora's. They leave, and outside, Riku opens up the way, allowing them to finally leave. In the ship, he states they'll find another way as too many people have suffered because of Ansem's actions and even a Nobody shouldn't have to die because of the unfortunate circumstances of his birth. So instead, he'll use what he has now to find another way.

They travel first to Radiant Garden and scour the labs and libraries in hopes of finding something, leaving Sora in the care of Aerith when they do so. It's staying with her one day that he overhears talk of Maleficent returning a few weeks after they arrive. Immediately, he uses his claws to scrawl out a note that he'll be back soon before he leaves to find her, eventually seeking her out in the upper towers of the castle. There, he makes a deal with her--for a favor in the future, she'll whip up a spell to grant him a human form and speech capabilities. They shake on it, and he transforms. She lets him know he can still use his claws, and then he leaves, heading to Twilight Town to relearn his shape.

There, as he's exploring, he comes across a young boy who looks exactly like Riku. When he follows him, he finds him meeting with a girl who looks remarkably like Kairi except with black hair. They head into a dark corridor and leave. Sora quickly follows them, curious. He arrives in Vexen's labs and meets with Naminé, a girl with silver hair who also resembles Kairi. He asks what's wrong when he finds her crying, and she explains that she's a prisoner, working on altering the memories of Replicas to help speed up the process. When it doesn't sit well with Sora, he opens a portal and offers to take her somewhere safe. Reluctantly, she joins him, and just before the portal closes, the Riku Replica and Kairi Replica follow, wondering where their friend is going.

They arrive in Twilight Town initially, and stay there a few days while Sora tries to figure out what to do. However, the appearance of Lesser Nobodies drives them to leave, ending up in Paris. With nothing on their tail, they settle in just in time for the Feast of Fools where Sora teaches the Replicas what it's like to be a real kid. Xion, the Kairi Replica, quickly becomes awed by Esmeralda, and Repliku takes a quick liking to Clopin and his dashing around. But the festival takes a turn for the terrible when Quasimodo, recently named King of Fools, is tied down and pelted with food. Sora prepares to release him after ushering the kids back to where they'd been staying--an abandoned home on the edge of town--but is beaten by Esmeralda. A fight breaks out, and he trips a few guards.

That evening, he spies on Quasimodo and wonders why he feels a kinship to him, so he seeks out the Archdeacon and asks about him--stating he's from out of town, and had seen the festival. The Archdeacon explains about Quasimodo and how Frollo keeps him locked away. Sora is immediately reminded of his own solitude, and seeks Quasimodo out. They speak a bit, and Sora calls him on his situation.

"I used to be just like you, hiding away because I believed what someone bad told me. And now..."

Sora reveals his nature as a Heartless to Quasimodo as warning of how steep the consequences can be of not listening to your heart. However, their talk is interrupted and Sora was forced to flee. Over the next few days, Frollo began to hunt Esmeralda down. Sora and his friends began to follow his movements, unsure of what he was going to do. It all came to a head at the miller's, where the house was ordered burned. Phoebus, the gallant captain, refused, and even saved the family when the house was lit on fire. The sentence granted him was death, and so he made for an escape.

The crowds scattered and the four returned to their makeshift home, preparing to leave the world. Sora lamented that he wouldn't see how Quasimodo took his advice, while Repliku lamented that he didn't get to know Phoebus better. They leave that night before Frollo can burn the house they'd been staying in to the ground.

Meanwhile, Riku and Kairi panic. Sora hasn't come back in over a week, and there's no indication where he went. They leave Hollow Bastion and head off to find Sora, starting with new worlds. Their first destination takes them to Predain, a gloomy world where they meet Taran and the pig he keeps, Hen Wen. The boys exchange stories of dreamed-of heroism, and in doing so, lose track of the pig while Kairi berates them. They find her not too much later, only for her to be kidnapped.
