Changes from canon, if AU: A lot? So sit back, and let me spin you a tale! Warning: slight Birth by Sleep spoilers!

Sora was a normal five-year-old boy. Living life, being playful, making friends. Everything was perfect! Until, one day, everything simply changed. A Heartless King decided to perform a long-term experiment to see how well he could quench the light of a child’s heart. After all, if such a brilliant light could be utterly destroyed, why couldn’t he destroy all light? It was pure chance that Sora was selected when the Heartless returned to the islands that made up his childhood home.

It was a normal day in Sora’s life that everything began. He had played hard, and when he went home that night, it was with the thought in his head that tomorrow he and Riku would explore the Secret Place. However, he never got the chance.

He had run upstairs to take a bath and change before supper, when something grabbed him. He squealed and cried for his mother, but he was simply dragged into a cold, dark space that chilled him to the core and made his little heart quiver in pain and fear. Eventually, he simply blacked out.

When Sora awoke, it was in the ruinous castle known as Hollow Bastion, and there was a small girl leaning over him. When Sora realized he was in another world, he cried for awhile. Eventually, the tears stopped. And it was soon after that that Sora was taken by strange creatures to the King of Heartless.

There, he was promptly told that his parents had abandoned him. Sora quickly and stubbornly denied this and claimed his parents would come for him. “We shall see,” the King said to him, amused. Sora stubbornly waited, but hours turned to days and then days to weeks. Eventually, he came to believe what was said, even though the girl—Kairi—told him not to. It was hard for a five-year-old to fathom why his parents hadn’t come for him.

And then, suddenly, Kairi was gone, too. He was utterly alone, with the only things left being Heartless. As time went by, the King became “dad” and Sora learned his name was Ansem. He was groomed to be loyal and work toward whatever goals the man had. He was even taught to fight, and given a special suit to protect him in the corridors of darkness.

Eventually, he began accompanying Ansem on his trips to annihilate worlds, and would even be held in the man’s arms when the world began to crumble. While Sora perceived this as affection, it was truly that Ansem didn’t want to lose his investment.

Sora grew old enough and tainted enough that he was eventually off on his own, leading the Heartless to destroy worlds. And he did it with a strange sense of glee and pride. The one person he had left would be proud of him, after all, and he’d see some of the affection that would be offered in return.

It was on one of these routine missions that Sora return to his childhood home of Destiny Islands. He found his old home abandoned, his parents nowhere to be found (Ansem had disposed of them). But Riku would still be around.

It was on the play island that they met. Sora had waited there for the Heartless to finish what they did best, because Sora wasn’t sure how to approach Riku. Fortunately, Riku did approach him. …Unfortunately, Riku answered Sora’s eager greetings with, “Who are you?”

This tore up what little shreds of light Sora still had and littered them on the bottom of his tattered and torn heart. He immediately vowed to kill Riku if the Heartless didn’t, and then began to leave in the darkness. Riku did try to follow him, though Sora chalked it up to a fear of what could happen to someone plunging themselves into the depths like that. They met again momentarily after Riku defeated the Darkside, Sora smirking as Destiny Islands fell apart.

Sora then walked into a portal and left Riku to his fate.

Personality:
First off, to start with what’s the same. For one, Sora is still energetic and a ball of energy. He’ll smile more often than not, and he deals with grief through anger and rage—just like in Kingdom Hearts 2 when Goofy supposedly died.

Another thing the same is that Sora is still Sora and thus dependent on bonds. However, the main difference is that Sora is isolated in the alternate universe. Therefore, he suffers from the lack of any ties beyond the one he has with the Seeker of Darkness. Because of this isolation, he is incredibly clingy and takes betrayal even more seriously.

Speaking of betrayal, he is insanely loyal, possibly even more so than the normal universe’s Sora. He can and will die for the one bond he has, and has actually destroyed entire worlds to gain even the smallest sign of affection—something he practically craves at this point.

Going along with this, unless it’s the odd, almost subtle “affection” the Ansem shows, Sora doesn’t know how to react to it. He doesn’t understand what hugging or kissing or even playing is anymore. Ansem raised him to be a warrior, a tool to destroy worlds, and his light has dimmed and warped incredibly because of this. He doesn’t know how to be a kid anymore, and he definitely wouldn’t understand what friendship really is now.

This Sora also does not hold human life in high regard. He was raised thinking that Heartless are superior, and the only reason he isn’t one is because Ansem cares about him and doesn’t want to risk that Sora would become another mindless drone. He’s been led to believe that he will only die when they destroy the universe through Kingdom Hearts.

His greatest fear is abandonment. Although he was kidnapped, his memories of the events are blurry enough that he believes Ansem’s words. He truly does believe his parents simply abandoned him, and his memories have warped what he knows of his life before Hollow Bastion. They’ve twisted into something ugly, and he can pick a million examples of how his parents never loved him—all of them born of lies told to him.

Sora finds comfort in darkness rather than light, and is much more knowledgeable than his canon counterpart—at least, in matters of darkness. He’s been taught that light is disgusting and need to be extinguished.

Abilities:
Sora’s abilities are quite a few, and reflect Riku’s in Kingdom Hearts I. That is, he is able to summon Heartless, control them, walk the corridors of darkness (in the dark suit, which is Riku’s in the canon timeline), summon Soul Eater, perform dark versions of spells, etc. This includes the enhanced senses. Namely, his sense of smell is enhanced.

Writing sample:
No. No, no, no. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. This isn’t how he’d imagined it. But then, what had he expected? That Riku would welcome him with open arms after nine years? That he’d be able to take Riku with him back to Hollow Bastion, and he’d have a human friend when all other humans had failed him? And now it’s proven that his life here was so inconsequential that he’s not even been remembered by who he thought was his best friend.

He swallows, clenches a fist so hard he’s pretty sure blood is drawn and fights back the tears that threaten to fall. He’d gotten his hopes up, and now it’s ripping his heart apart. He should have seen it coming, really. He should have. But all he can do is chuckle, and let darkness wrap around him to form the suit that protects him. It doesn’t matter now. After all, the Heartless are already ripping this world apart. If Riku’s not eliminated by them, then Sora will take care of him by himself.

With a low chuckle and a dark grin spread across his face to mask his pain, he begins to step back into swirling darkness.

“I guess I’m just not worth remembering.”
